TIGHT JEANS
"How can a man where jeans that tight?"
Destiny Ekaragha, Winner of The London Rushes Soho Film Festival Awards for Best Newcomer, wrote and directed the short film Tight Jeans. This comedy explores the attitudes between different cultures, from the perspective of three black men sitting on a wall outside of an estate.
The film opens with several shops of a busy market, from these we can see many different ethnicities and cultures, shopping in harmony. This gives us an essence to the story, about how cultures perceive others, and how sometimes they are ignorant of one another.
We meet these three young men against a mundane brown building, their brightly coloured hoodies contrasting against the brick. This mise-en-scene immediately draws the audiences attention towards the characters. A debate is sparked after another boy walks past wearing tight jeans. This simple ideas creates 5 minutes of comic tension between the boys. Their slow pan past the boys horrified expressions as they watch the boy in tight jeans walk away, gives the audience a hint of what is about to happen, and enables the audience to empathise with the boys emotions. The cinematography and editing of this sequence enables the audience to see what the boys are looking at through shot-reverse-shot.
